King Robert the Bruce of Scotland, pursued after defeat in the battle, hid in a lonely cave. King Bruce tried to plan the future but was tempted to despair. King Bruce had lost heart and had decided to give up when his eye was caught by a spider. The insect (Spider) was making carefully and painfully its way up a slender thread to its web in the corner above.
King Bruce watched as it made several unsuccessful attempts and thought as it fell back to the bottom repeatedly how it typified his own efforts. Then at last the spider made it. King Bruce took courage and persevered and the example of the spider brought its reward. Story of Robert Bruce and spider in English:
There was once a king of Scotland whose name was Robert Bruce. He had need to be both brave and wise, for the times in which he lived were wild and rude. The King of England was at war with him, and had led a great army into Scotland to drive him out of the land.
Battle after battle had been fought. Six times had Bruce led his brave little army against his foes; and six times had his men been beaten, and driven into flight. At last his army was scattered, and he was forced to hide himself in the woods and in lonely places among the mountains.
One rainy day, Bruce lay on the ground under a rude shed, listening to the patter of the drops on the roof above him. He was tired and sick at heart, and ready to give up all hope. It seemed to him that there was no use for him to try to do anything more.
As he lay thinking, he saw a spider over his head, making ready to weave her web. He watched her as she toiled slowly and with great care. Six times she tried to throw her frail thread from one beam to another, and six times it fell short.
"Poor thing!" said Bruce: "you, too, know what it is to fail."
But the spider did not lose hope with the sixth failure. With still more care, she made ready to try for the seventh time. Bruce almost forgot his own troubles as he watched her swing herself out upon the slender line. Would she fail again? No! The thread was carried safely to the beam, and fastened there.
"I, too, will try a seventh time!" cried Bruce.
He arose and called his men together. He told them of his plans, and sent them out with messages of cheer to his disheartened people. Soon there was an army of brave Scotch-men around him. Another battle was fought, and the King of England was glad to go back into his own country.
I have heard it said, that, after that day, no one by the name of Bruce would ever hurt a spider. The lesson which the little creature had taught the king was never forgotten.

Once upon a time, a long time ago, there lived in Scotland an emperor named King Bruce. Brave and wise, he ruled over Scotland when it was not yet a part of England.
One day, the king of England marched into Scotland to overthrow King Bruce, in an attempt to get Scotland to become a part of England. King Bruce at once gathered a small army, to ensure that the enemy would be kept at bay.
Now, this small army, while spirited, fought valiantly against the troops of England, but ended up losing to them. They tried five more times, but in vain. In the end – after the sixth unsuccessful attempt, that is – all that remained was a ‘broken’ army, that was devoid of all hope.
With his army scattered, King Bruce was in a quandary. Not knowing what to do and fearing for his life, he spent all his time hiding in places like the mountains and the dense woods. With every passing day, he lost hope.
One day, all of a sudden, it started raining cats and dogs. King Bruce thought that this was the last straw – nothing could possibly go any more wrong with his life! Finding a cave nearby, he went inside to seek shelter.
Lying with a sense of hopelessness in the cave, King Bruce suddenly noticed, from the corner of his eye, a spider. On closer inspection, it seemed to be trying its best to spin a web from one end of the cave to the other. However, the thread was extremely thin and the spider kept failing, every single time.
The spider, undeterred, persisted in her attempt to spin the web. After failing for the sixth time, she decided, on the seventh attempt, to try and spin her web from the other side of the cave. Voila! The web was finally spun.
King Bruce, amazed at what he had just witnessed, proclaimed:
“If a tiny spider can have the fortitude to keep trying against all odds, why should ‘I’ not try again?”
And thus it was at the very moment when the rain stopped and King Bruce stepped out of the cave, that he decided, like the spider had, to try for the seventh time. He gathered his army once again, and told them to bring all the men they could, to help them make their fight even stronger. The men did as they were told, and inspired by King Bruce’s newfound courage, fought the battle against the English army yet again.
This time, the battle was won by King Bruce’s army!
