Key Schemes Managed

• EPF (Employees' Provident Fund Scheme, 1952): A savings plan where both the worker and employer put in 12% of the basic salary each month to build a retirement fund.

• EDLI (Employees' Deposit Linked Insurance Scheme, 1976): A plan that gives life insurance support to the family if a worker dies.

Main Functions

• Account Management: Gives workers a permanent Universal Account Number (UAN) to track funds across jobs.
• Interest and Growth: Adds government-approved yearly interest to the saved money.
• Claims and Withdrawals: Lets members take out money for emergencies, house buying, or final retirement.

You can check your EPF balance instantly through four official methods. Your Universal Account Number (UAN) must be activated and linked to your mobile number to use these services.

1. Give a Missed Call (Fastest Method)

• Dial 9966044425 from your registered mobile number.
• The call will disconnect automatically after two rings.
• You will receive an SMS containing your total balance and your latest contribution details.
• Note: This service is free and works without an internet connection.

2. Send an SMS

• Open your phone's messaging app.
• Type EPFOHO UAN ENG (replace UAN with your actual 12-digit UAN number).
• Send the text message to 7738299899.
• You can change the last three letters to get the SMS in other languages (e.g., HIN for Hindi, TAM for Tamil).

3. Use the Online EPFO Portal

• Navigate directly to the official EPFO Member Passbook Portal.
• Input your UAN, password, and the CAPTCHA code displayed on the screen.
• Click Sign In.
• Select your specific Member ID from the drop-down menu to view your detailed balance sheet.

4. Use the UMANG Mobile App

• Download the UMANG App from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
• Open the app and select the EPFO service category.
• Tap on Employee Centric Services and select View Passbook.
• Verify your identity by entering your UAN to receive a one-time password (OTP) on your phone.

The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) framework has simplified EPF withdrawal rules, replacing the old 13 criteria with three clean withdrawal categories: Essential Needs, Housing Needs, and Special Circumstances.

You can make a Full Withdrawal only upon retirement or during prolonged unemployment, while Partial Withdrawals (Advances) are permitted for specific life events during your career.


1. Final / Full Withdrawal Rules

• Retirement: You can withdraw 100% of your total fund once you reach 58 years of age.
• Job Loss / Unemployment:
• You can withdraw 75% of your PF balance after 1 month of continuous unemployment.
• The remaining 25% balance can be withdrawn after 2 months of continuous unemployment to settle the account.
• Pension (EPS) Rules: If you served for less than 9.5 years, you can withdraw your full pension amount. If your service exceeds 9.5 years, you cannot withdraw the cash; you instead become eligible for a lifetime monthly pension after retirement.

2. Partial Withdrawal Rules (Advances)
For most partial withdrawals during your employment, the minimum service requirement is 12 months, and a minimum balance of 25% must remain in your account to protect your retirement fund.

3. Tax Rules (TDS) on Withdrawals

• No Tax (Tax-Free): Withdrawals are completely tax-free if you have completed 5 or more years of continuous service before making the claim.
• Taxable (TDS Applies): If you withdraw your money before completing 5 years of service, TDS will be deducted at:
• 10% if you submit your PAN Card.
• 34.6% if you do not submit your PAN Card.
• How to avoid TDS: If your total income for the year falls below the taxable limit, you can upload Form 15G (or Form 15H for senior citizens) alongside your claim to stop the tax deduction.
